Documentary, Music, 10-Oct-2023
A documentary about the end of a young man’s musical project told through the anecdotes and recollections of everyone who helped along the way. “The Death of Art Slob,” directed by musician Amar Ahmad, is a poignant ode to suburban scenes, house shows, college towns, and the American enclaves where youth culture blossoms and also comes to its end. On the night of his last show, we meet Amar, aka Art Slob. Him and his friends anticipate the evening. From there, observing moments from age 16 to 22, Ahmad colors the vivid life of Art Slob through fourth-wall broken sequences, interviews with friends from college and back home, and an endearing series of scenes played out by his own mother. Through its mixed format and narrative approach, Ahmad’s documentary beautifully chronologizes the chapters of this musician’s early output. Despite the film’s melancholic sentiment, it serves as a lovely celebration to the final beats of what is often considered one’s coming-of-age. -JM. Director: Amar Ahmad.
