Cheyenne is a teen punk fan trying to convince her friend, Maggie, to come with her to their first show. “This is Not a Love Song,” by director Ursula Ellis, is a MFA student short from Columbia University which captures the raw enthusiasm of teenage rebellion, led by a charismatic lead performance by Chloe Roe. Trying to spark in her friend the same level of fandom she’s feeling, in particular, of female-fronted punk groups (and not straight-edge), Cheyenne persuades Maggie to come with her to a show in the city, and wants her to look the part (“do you wanna wear some of my clothes tonight?”), and act the part (“I thought you’d be cool”). But they struggle to find the same wavelength, and end up having wildly different experiences. Invariably true to the punk ethos, Ellis’ film is a scratchy, distorted ball of energy and attitude. Written & directed by Ursula Ellis. Starring Chloe Roe, Ocean Currier, Fred Winkler, Kasey Huizinga. DP: Nick Perron-Siegel. Editor: Russell Yaffe. Producers: Emerson Nosek, Max Rifkind-Barron. Production/Costume Designer: Carrie Heckel.
