A man seeks answers when he finds a pair of golden truck nuts mysteriously affixed to his Honda Civic. Zach Romeo directs “This is Nuts,” an absurd account of local fate and fable told through a low-polygon animation style. While a guitar is pensively plucked, we hear a man narrate—a destructive storm has passed through his town the evening before causing widespread damage. The narrator’s home went unscathed but he discovers a dangling scrotum welded to the hitch of his 80s Civic. When he meets his buddies at a local bar, they push him to investigate further—an acquaintance works at Autozone and has information on a purchase of truck nuts before the storm. Following the lead, the narrator arrives at an eerie cabin in the woods searching for answers. Rendered in a Y2K style of animation (by Lewis Dahm), the film contains an unexpected level of heaviness and mystery as the score by Colin Miller reaches its gradual crescendo. -JM.
