Drama, Short Films, 09-May-2024
An actress’s discreet plans for her Thursday take an unexpected turn. “Thursday,” directed by Bren Cukier, is a drama set in Poland where a young woman proceeds with an at-home abortion. Maria tries to take her mind off the heavy decision, rehearsing lines in the bathtub for an upcoming audition, or dancing around the living room. Over the phone, she speaks with a medical professional, trying to push beyond feelings of dread and suffocation. Soon, a family member visits with her baby, and a phone call with her partner worsens her anxiety. Both the film’s sterile but stylistic tone and charged performance by Marianna Zydek work to deliver a compelling look at this physically and psychologically intense moment in time. -JM.
