The quest for virtual food — infinite pizza, zero calories — hits a snag when inventors mistake a short film for competition. Malcom Mills directs the strange vision, “VR Food,” melding horror, sci-fi, and dark comedy in layers of dream-state flashes. Malcolm and Mallory are working together on a breakthrough technology that would eliminate the need for grocery stores or farmers. In their testing phase, they become entangled with potent side effects which break down the line between reality and nightmare. When they learn of an unrelated short film about VR food playing at a local film festival, they freak out and go in search of the filmmaker. With inventive DIY prop making and art design, the film revels in the bizarre and grotesque in its depiction of a squalid attempt to upend the natural world. -KA. Director, writer, editor, composer: Malcolm Mills. Cast: Malcolm Mills, John Early, Alexandria Churchwell, Gil Zabarsky. Director of Photography: Chris Willmore. Producers: Frank Corbiserie, Malcolm Mills, Gil Zabarsky.
