A young man encounters a party predicament, to freak or nah? R.J. Sanchez directs “Freak,” a hilariously endearing coming-of-age portrait about grind dancing, nostalgic in form and feeling. Angel struts home, carrying the lower half of a mannequin in his arms. He props it up in his bedroom, confidently freaking behind it to TOO SHORT’s “Blow the Whistle” in preparation for a party later in the evening. The banter between his homies is loud, the pressure is on, but Angel falls short when the time finally comes. Just as he’s fully spacing out, she might give him another chance. The young man’s desire to grind is just as rich as is the film’s 16mm texture, expressionistic bursts, and youthful, chicano ensemble. -JM. Writer & Director: R.J. Sanchez.
