A desktop computer tells its life story from 1988 to the late 2000s. Hamilton O’Toole directs “The Life and Death of a Gateway TB3 Personal Computer,” a 3D-animated, dark comedy rendering the melancholic nostalgia of the family-computer era. Gymnopedie No. 1 plays while a sentient computer narrates with its monotone voice. Purchased by a man named Paul, its early tasks were to report basketball scores and play solitaire, later making memories with Paul’s son, Christopher, and then a second-hand owner, Julie. To its eventual crash, the machine ruminates on torrent downloads, music-blog scrolling, evolving video games, and pubescent forays into pornography. O’Toole brings “browser history” to new meaning, finding comedic light and darkness in the coming-of-age of a computer and its users. -JM. Director/Animator/Writer: Hamilton O'Toole.
