Pajarito
Animation, Short Films, 05-Nov-2026
Tensions rise between two sisters in rural Spain in the 1980’s. Pilar Garcia-Fernandezsesma directs “Pajarito,” a surprisingly dark animated drama of a young girl’s coming-of-age. Maite strolls through the woods alone. She finds an ailing baby bird on the ground, fallen from a nest, and brings it home with her. There, she lives with Teresa, her older sister, and Teresa’s firstborn child. Parents out of sight, it's just the three of them, living off leftover funds from a deceased grandmother. Newfound interest in anatomy lures Maite to experiment, and, when she’s left alone with her niece one afternoon, playing mother tensely leads to wounds and blood. There’s a rich contextual backdrop and an artful one in Garcia-Fernandezsesma’s rendering of hand and digitally drawn layers, an impressive leap in storytelling from the last short of hers we featured, “Ciervo.” -JM.
