A small time travel vlogger’s tour of Coney Island is interrupted by an unexpected phone call. Amber Schaefer directs “NYC Tips and Tricks,” a satirical portrait of a man so preoccupied with filming his frivolous-seeming video that he struggles to fulfill basic fatherly responsibilities. With his full arsenal of selfie sticks and head cams, Cody Friedman shows his viewers around the Coney Island boardwalk and theme park -- riding roller coasters, devouring hot dogs, chasing birds, etc. When he gets a call that his son has lice and needs to be picked up from school, he desperately tries to arrange someone else to do it, so he can continue his shoot. Schaefer’s film (co-written by and starring Yoni Lotan) pinpoints the plight of the artist with absurdity and spontaneous comic detail, a fresh mix of funny, sad, desperate, and existential, punctuated by a soaring mix of moody tunes. -KA. Director: Amber Schaefer. Writers: Amber Schaefer and Yoni Lotan. Starring: Yoni Lotan, Alyssa Limperis, Margaret Reed, Andi Poland. DoP: Jordan T. Parrott. Editor: Micah Gardner. Producer: Sam Broscoe.
