Struggling to keep his own mental health stable, a disability support worker spends the day with the young man he assists. “Carer,” directed by Oliver Wicks, intimately observes two men, their friendship, and the modes at which they confront their lives. Waiting for Mitch, his caretaker, to arrive, Connor (23) starts his morning with video games. Mitch, however, begins his day on the rockier side. He can’t get his prescription for mood stabilizers re-filled and arguing with the pharmacy isn’t much help. From afternoon into evening, the two young men find moments to unwind despite anxiety still kindling in Mitch’s head. Their endearing dynamic works to full effect—they go bowling, share fries in the park, and rehearse for Connor’s upcoming job interview. While Wicks allows for scenes to breathe, Joseph Buchanan’s score carefully captures the thematic tension of a silent struggle with mental health. -JM. Director: Oliver Wicks. Cast: Will Johnston.
