A man desperately fights for his place in the world by defeating a child in a game of basketball. “Public Park,” directed by Alosha Robinson, features Brian Fiddyment as a meandering man caught in a series of peculiar exchanges. Dan begins his day purchasing unlabeled shampoos and creams from an old friend on a street corner. Next, he strolls by a Brooklyn blacktop where a young boy shoots hoops. Seeing an opportunity to taste victory, Dan bets $1,000 on himself, but coming out with the win isn’t a given. Dan's wandering continues, and, from afar, he notices his girlfriend, played by Aparna Nancherla, supposedly cheating on him. Dan has questions, and she answers them truthfully to his dismay. Fiddyment’s portrayal of the pathetic man is charming, and we’re treated to a number of off-kilter interactions with familiar faces in alternative comedy. -JM.
