A dejected man living in Los Angeles limps through a prolonged break-up and the distractions in the aftermath. Brian Follmer directs “Dys-Sympathetic,” a satirical featurette poking at casual sex, casual romance, and the emotional deterioration of it all. Tyler waits for his ex-girlfriend, Zoe, at a bar. We listen to his train-of-thought in the form of narration. He thinks about all the fake food he’s recently eaten and considers what he'll say about himself on his new Tinder profile. After hooking up one again, Tyler and Zoe try returning to “no-contact.” As Tyler begins a numbing, sex-induced bender, Zoe comes by his apartment, wanting more and sharing the news that she’s pregnant. Tyler acquires abortion pills, and the two experience it together at his place. In the events that unfold and his pursuit of different, impassioned women, Tyler, played by Sam Jacobs, maintains his burnout state. Follmer tackles the ‘situationship’ with a directness and understates the raw circumstances of his characters with dry comedy. -JM.
