When a dinner party takes an unexpected turn, Zoe ruins the night for everyone. Zane Rubin directs and stars in “A Good Dinner Party,” an awkward comedy about a group of L.A. friends considering taking their friendship to the next level. The cringey theatrics begin right after dinner, as the topic of conversation moves past board games, and into a provocative proposal made by a couple just returning from an eye-opening experience in Joshua Tree. (“Have you guys ever thought about doing something a little more adult.”) Of the group, Zoe is the least receptive to said proposal, and she makes it well known, even as the other couples seem to be warming to it. It’s a bad anxiety dream, played for laughs, which continues Rubin’s series of sharp-witted comedies preoccupied with sex, or more accurately sexual restraint (see also: “The Last Virgin in LA” and “The Netflix and Chill”).
