Jessica is the CEO of a hip new drug cartel. Her assistant Louise handles all the little details. “Girl Powder,” directed by Annelise Ogaard is a sharp satire on the world of dubious start-ups and the founders aiming to revolutionize. Presented as an edgy promo piece — complete with soundbite-laden interviews and a revealing behind-the-scenes tour (employees vape in the office, watch porn) — Ogaard targets millennial marketing tactics, entrepreneur ethos, and the perceptions/complexities of being a woman in a male-dominated field. As Jessica explains it, “drugs are cute and fun,” and the company is founded on the premise that the “gross, obvious” drug dealers of old will come to be replaced. On the surface, she’s inspiring and powerful, but her harsh approach can make her miserable to work for — she tortures her assistant by demanding freshly-made juice and sending her on dangerous errands. What begins as an affirmative profile turns into an after-hours exposé of the company’s shady operational methods. Tea Hacic is perfectly cast as the self-assured leader, dead set on claiming her piece of the pie, at all costs.
