A woman searches for meaning in her life, where all days seem to blend into one. Varya Rootwood directs “Groundhog Year,” an experimental film poem rendered with striking, darkly funny compositions and sarcastic monologue. She spends her day gardening, drinking coffee, and reading. Except, she’s not really doing any of these things because she’s locked in place, contorted upside down or sideways, or face down in the dirt. Aiming for a happy, fulfilled life, she instead finds herself dissatisfied and flailing, spilling coffee on herself, a hose sprays in her face, et al. We previously featured Rootwood with her 2019 experimental dance piece, “Twins: You Must Be Related,” both films have a knack for capturing expressive bodies in ordinary spaces. -KA. Starring, written, directed by Varya Rootwood. Director of Photography: Yura Makarov. Sound Design: Ash Knowlton. Title Design: Isobel Chiang.
