A man seeking a fresh start attempts a 24-hour digital detox, but it backfires into global catastrophe. John Merizalde directs “IT’S SO OVER,” a dark comedy harshly realizing the consequences of digital footprints in a techno-feudal landscape. After Michael goes through his ex-girlfriend’s computer and gets carried away snooping, he desperately tries to re-connect. But she wants no part of it. Doomscrolling into oblivion, Michael decides to get offline for a bit. He downloads a screen-time control app and makes a farewell post on his story. However, before he knows it, a hacker takes control of his online identity. Michael wakes up to an onslaught of text messages and calls from friends who have seen a viral video of him claiming responsibility for a eco-terrorist attack. Unable to access any of his social media accounts or financial assets, he hurries over to his tech-savvy friend’s house for assistance. We watch the whole thing unfold via a rotation of surveillance camera angles. In the film’s climactic moments, there’s an eerie montage of poly-cam renders and data overlays tracking Michael’s every last step. The maximal textures of movies about the internet are a recent stylistic trend in no-budget filmmaking, but it’s rare a film delivers on the fears of being online as effectively and comedically as is captured here. -JM.
