When a young musician visits her musical collaborators’ place for a studio session, a revelation brings the dynamics of their friendship into question. LaChelle Chrysanne directs “One of the Guys,” an upbeat episodic drama where a group of young musicians manage a kickback and mixing session while dealing with friend dynamics. After combing through her collection of records, Mel gets ready to head to a studio session to work with her partners Deshawn and Isaiah. When she arrives, friends of friends smoke on the sofa, music plays, and some more “friends,” Angel and Tori, arrive. While Mel tries to keep herself and her two male collaborators focused on the session, Deshawn wades back and forth from room to room trying to sustain the party; he’s enthusiastic to share some mixed drinks with the two ladies. Losing faith that there’ll be any productivity recording, Mel disregards Deshawn and his continuing antics. That is until an argument breaks out between Deshawn and Angel over some unwarranted actions. With its episodic length and brief musical beats, LaChelle creates a timely dramatic arc that raises some forthright ethical questions on creative scenes and toxic tendencies. -JM. Director: LaChelle Chrysanne. DP: Sanjay Singh. Cast: Shakerria B Henderson, Ahmad Damani DeChalus, Colin Pieters, Krystal Higgins, Elle Pierre, and Alejandro Bonilla.
