A dancer reflects on a recent injury in Anne Hollowday’s “Physical Thoughts.” A vivid portrait rendered with striking images and poetic narration, it’s a film about the limits of verbal expression (“we all have thoughts; we don’t share many of them”) and the possibilities of physical expression (“when you see a dancer, you’re seeing their whole life”). Water flows and drips throughout, a motif that reflects the natural world as we explore the complexities of a woman seeking to better understand herself, and aiming to move beyond narrow definitions of her central passion. We previously featured Hollowday with “Common Structure” (co-directed with Bill Kirstein), an experimental narrative that featured a similarly evocative stream of moments.
