After viewing a botched depiction of himself, a nude drawing model sprouts an ear from the back of his head. Nathan Ginter’s “The Third Ear” is an understated thriller with a surreal take on self image. Working as a janitor, a middle-aged man mops the floor of an art gallery space. At the end of his shift, he encounters a flyer for a figure drawing class seeking nude models and decides to give it a go. Moved by the many depictions of himself following the first session, a particular drawing catches his eye: a view of the back of his head depicting a third ear. Soon the work manifests into reality leading to psychological turmoil. Ginter crafts a suspenseful nightmare with an overwhelming soundscape and atmospheric visuals. JM.
