Comedy, Short Films, 24-Feb-2021
On his way to Brad's animal-themed housewarming party, Richard stops at CVS and calls a close friend for advice about his costume. “The Woodpecker,” made by the directing team of Courtney Bush, Will Carington, and Jake Goicoechea, is a subtly funny slice-of-life sequence. In other hands, it might not register as much, but Bush, Carington and Goicoechea have a special touch, as evidenced in their previous collabs, “Kim Bush’s Abduction,” and “Marilyn Monroe’s School for French Girls”. We pick up in progress as Richard combs the aisles looking for products that can aid in his costume. On the other end of the line is his friend Jake, lying in bed, brainstorming possible ideas before launching into an A cappella rendition of a new club banger he wrote. The filmmaking trio has a knack for finding rich detail in everyday conversations and building characters with an utterly real shorthand (not as easy as it looks!). All three films are teeming with quippy (but never overwritten) exchanges from natural performers with great comic timing. -KA. Directors: Courtney Bush, Will Carington, Jake Goicoechea. Cast: Richard Perez, Jake Goicoechea, Courtney Bush. Director of Photography: Julian Kapadia. Editor: Erin DeWitt. Producers: Courtney Bush, Will Carington, Jake Goicoechea.
