La Bruja
The Break Up

Comedy, Short Films, 22-Jul-2019
After a break-up, a young Mexican American woman meets a witch who offers to help. “La Bruja,” directed by Eliza Cossio and Hayley Kosan, is a bilingual dark comedy, sprinkled with fantasy sequences, about coming to terms with an ex and yourself. On her birthday dinner, Ellie gets dumped by her insensitive anesthesiologist boyfriend (played by Anthony Oberbeck), leaving her with the bill and an unshakable sadness. When she mysteriously comes across a witch offering assistance, she agrees, but first needs to track down a couple items, like a vial of tears and a “teeny tiny bit of cocaine.” While she goes in search, she’s interrupted by fantasies of bigger and better things — in her daydreams, she’s on the cover of “Everyone Wants to Fuck Me” magazine, and dating Gael García Bernal (not the real one, her ex insists). Cossio stars as Ellie, and she’s a naturally charismatic performer, and her film follows suit, a colorful, sharply written tale of heartache in search of redemption. -KA.
