Music, Short Films, 02-Nov-2022
In a non-traditional approach to live performance, MAURICE performs three songs in a production teetering on the brink of collapse. “3 Songs,” directed and performed by Devan Joseph and Jason Gaines, is a dynamic music video that frames potent performances with kinetic editing. Breaking down the creative process, and filled with fresh technique, the video renders its hip-hop / indie songs with inter-band conflict in a bare studio. The first song — “Baby (It’s Been a Minute)” — finds the duo clothed in all black flanked by live instrumentation and a film crew. Joseph carries the tune as Gaines punctuates with avant-garde movement. Changing into white outfits for the second song — “What I Look Like” — the pair quarrels over a mistake in the backing track. In the final song — “Oceans” — the young men search for redemption / healing / understanding. We previously featured Maurice in 2019 with their video, “Be yourself Be confidence,” and both are built with a loose, raw energy and an emotional core. -KA.
